The volcano

The 'Beaulieu Volcano' which covers an area of 2 to 3 km, is located approximately 10km north-east of Aix-en-Provence. An eruption occurred over 17 million years ago during the period which geologists refer to as the Miocene era. Using the term “volcano” may seem odd as there is no visible cone, as in the case of the Puy de Dôme in the Massif Central or of the Vesuvius in Italy. Beaulieu is in fact a sunken volcano, an oval shaped crater filled with lava.
